What It Does

Every day you get one word, with everything it needs in order to stick: a definition that starts from the common synonym and only then refines it, the nuance — what this word does that its synonym does not — a verified etymology rather than a guessed one, and a sentence you could actually use it in.

The words are not picked for how rare they are, but along a finer line: between what you produce yourself and what you merely recognise. "Palincă" does not qualify — you say it anyway. "Bură", "chindie", "a făgădui" do — you know them, but they no longer come to your tongue.

Definition, nuance, origin

Each word comes with the common synonym first, then the nuance that separates them, a verified etymology, and a sentence showing it in use.

Two collections

"Uitate" is the old layer — archaic, regional, folk and poetic, rooted in Slavonic, Turkish, Hungarian or inherited Latin. Free and complete. "Alese" is today's cultivated vocabulary: French, Latin and Greek neologisms.

The background comes from the word

The landscape behind each word is not picked at random. It comes from the region the word entered the language through, read from its etymology: Hungarian through Transylvania, Turkish from south of the Danube, French through 1900s Bucharest.
